SHOULD I UPGRADE TO MICROSOFT VISTA?
By Chuck Rogers
Vista , the new operating system released mid February by Microsoft is the talk of the industry. Everyone is talking about it. If you are thinking about upgrading to it or buying a new computer or notebook with Vista preinstalled read on.
The new features are pretty cool and tantalizing. The most obvious is the 3D menu system, new videos to learn how to use the computer (goodbye Video Professor), and my favorite the 3D sidebar offering real-time webfeeds to headline news, weather, and other useful gadgets. Other new features are the new security system to help protect against spyware and other threats, some new games to waste some time and different shut-down operations, just to mention a few.
I have been through all of the Microsoft Operating Systems including DOS (my favorite), Windows 3.1, Windows 95, 98, Windows Millennium, Windows 2000 and all of the Windows XP versions. All of them have had their benefits and draw backs!
Each time Microsoft has released a new operating system there were lines of people waiting at the superstores all night long, but not this time. There were very few excited about the new operating system called Vista . I think that most have learned from their mistakes! You see that when an operating system is released they will find out what works great and what needs to be patched. All in all, Vista seems pretty solid, but with a few draw backs.
Vista does need processing power and memory. I would recommend at least a 1.4 GHz processor and 512mb of memory. Doubling both the processing power and the memory performs much better especially if you want the Vista Premium! It is also nice to have a video card with 128mb of memory to assist those 3d menus. I am currently running Vista Premium on a notebook computer with an AMD Turion 64X2 TL-56 dual 1.6 GHz processor, 2GB of memory and a nVidia GeForce GO 7600 video card with 256mb memory which runs Vista awesome!
If you are a new user, or a user that primarily uses the computer for e-mail & internet go for Vista ! If you currently use the computer and rely on specific software titles a little research is necessary. Before deciding to make the plunge you should do a “self software inventory”. Write down all of the software titles with their version numbers that you rely on (i.e. Outlook Express 6.0, Corel Draw 8, QuickBooks Pro 2005, etc…). Next you should verify with those software manufacturers for compatibility, or give us a call. If you are thinking of upgrading your current system to Vista there is an Advisor tool that is free to download. Next, you need to choose which of the 4 versions of Vista to use. And finally, you can read more information about Vista on Microsofts website by clicking here.
